Hello, mama!
I have struggled with morning routines for years! I still do at times, but since Covid, I have tried my hardest to stick to one.
It took me a long while to figure out what worked for me, I would watch YouTube videos, read up on routines, tried many, and tested different methods. But nothing worked.
I realised I was competing against those who have a good two hours before the start of their working day, to work out for half an hour, have a relaxing cup of coffee whilst they write their To-Do Lists, fit in a quick sauna session, now that's great for them, however, I can almost guarantee they do not have children or a busy family home.
That doesn’t mean a morning routine isn’t important for us mamas. I believe it to be critical to have one. But a realistic one. So I continued to work inwards and realise what is it that will work for me And you need one that works for YOU.
Why are morning routines important for us mamas?
First of all, I believe our days can get hijacked if we don’t plan and take control from the moment we wake up. All the outside noise will come into our world and set our priorities for us before we can even get the chance to do it for ourselves.
Having your child as your alarm puts us into ‘mum mode’ before we even have the chance to use the bathroom. This then spreads throughout the day, until we hit burnout!
So, I take 30 minutes, because, in this season of my life where my child is young, I am running a small business, I do not have the time to extend it any longer, for now.
Having 20 - 30 minutes for ourselves can be a game-changer, we have taken power over our time, we set the tone for the day, and most likely eliminate burnout by the end of it.
So mamas, how about trying a routine refresh? Whether you are currently struggling with one at the moment or do not have one at all, why not give it a go and see if it helps make your life that little bit easier
Customise your routine:
For many of us, being in mum mode only means we push our needs aside, which is why having a morning routine can give you some time to do the things you push back and wish you had the time for
- Understand how much time you have in the morning. Ask yourself what do you want to achieve once you wake up
- Write down your morning non-negotiables - what needs to be done and can only be done that morning? What can you eliminate and do the night before?
- What do you want to add to your morning routine? Is it 5 minutes to exercise? Write down your To-Do List? Meditate? Or simply have a few moments to yourself?
Once you understand your 'Why', and have a clear plan of what you will be doing once you wake up, it will be easier for you to implement your new routine.
Routine Refresh Ideas:
- Wake up before the kids (age-appropriate)
- Exercise/stretch/meditate for 5-10 minutes
- Take a shower
- Write your To-Do List
- Handle any tasks that are more difficult to do later in the day
- Identify your priorities for the day
- Have breakfast in peace
- Spend some time working on that business idea
- Affirmations
There is so much power in morning routines, it can shape our day, and create a place for you to be the best version of yourself.
Remember, do what works for you and your family, you may not get it right first go, experiment, and try again!
